August 11, (THEWILL) – Nick Kyrgios upset world number one Daniil Medvedev at the Canadian Open on Wednesday, in another composed effort, continuing a phenomenal summer for the Australian.
Carlos Alcaraz, the tournament’s second seed, and top-seeded Medvedev were eliminated on the same day in Montreal, and Kyrgios’ 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-2 triumph over the Russian was as bit as spectacular as Tommy Paul’s elimination of the young Spaniard.
The serve dominated early on at the IGA Stadium, as might be expected in a match between Kyrgios and Medvedev, with games advancing quickly since neither player was able to put many balls into play on the return. Medvedev was puzzled by Kyrgios’ mix of serve-volleying, underarm serves, and drop shots, all of which helped to win the deciding third set.
The Australian was ranked 137 in February but after reaching the Wimbledon final in July and winning the Citi Open in Washington last week, Kyrgios has experienced an incredible rise to reckoning once again in the sport. This is further proof of his remarkable form at the moment.
Whether he can top all of that by winning the US Open, which gets underway in New York later this month, will be the next issue.
