CAF Revokes Guinea’s Hosting Rights For 2025 AFCON

September 02, (THEWILL) – Africa’s football governing body, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has declared that Guinea will no longer hold the hosting rights for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

THEWILL recalls that on November 30, 2018, CAF announced Guinea as the hosts of the 2022 AFCON. It was this decision that was revoked on Thursday, after CAF’s Executive Committee agreed that Guinea would not be prepared to host the competition by the time it was scheduled, which is anticipated to be in the summer of 2025.

The statement from CAF read: “The Executive Committee was unanimous that Guinea will not be ready to host the competition. The Executive Committee took a unanimous decision based on the report as submitted that the tournament be withdrawn from Guinea. The President suggested that a delegation be sent to Guinea to inform them of the decision taken by EXCO.

“Resolution: The Executive Committee resolved to send a delegation to Guinea to inform them of CAF’s decision to withdraw the Africa Cup of Nations Guinea 2025 from Guinea.”

As THEWILL previously reported, Amaju Pinnick, the president of the Nigerian Football Federation, stated a few weeks ago that CAF was likely to revoke Guinea’s privilege to host AFCON and that Nigeria is collaborating with Benin on a bid. However, CAF denied the claim.
