October 29, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid’s miserable week did not improve at the weekend as they suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Cadiz in La Liga on Saturday.
Atletico conceded the quickest La Liga goal of the season with Theo Bongonda’s opener after only 27 seconds to add to the pain of being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League group stages in a dramatic manner with a 2-2 home draw to Bayer Leverkusen in midweek.
Nine minutes from time, Alex Fernandez appeared to have won it for the home team, but an own goal by Luis Hernandez and a breathtaking drive by Joao Felix allowed Atletico to tie the score.
However, a remarkable turn of events occurred in the eighth and final minute of injury time when Ruben Sobrino headed in a cross from Ivan Alejo. VAR upheld the goal despite the fact that Sobrino appeared to use his arm in the action.
In their next games, Atletico will travel to Porto in the UEFA Champions League while Cadiz will play Getafe in La Liga.
