Cadiz Drop Into Relegation Zone After Resilient 1-1 Draw Against Real Madrid

May 16, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid were forced to a 1-1 draw by Cadiz after Mariano Diaz’s early goal was cancelled out by Ruben Soriano.

Andriy Lunin also saved an Alvaro Negredo penalty kick in the second half, which was Negredo’s first La Liga penalty miss in a decade.

Cadiz began strongly, almost taking the lead through Sobrino, and they had plenty to play for. The Cadiz player took a risky 25-yard half-volley at goal, but the ball sailed just shy of the top left corner despite being well hit.

Real put an end to that auspicious Cadiz start in the fifth minute. Although Diaz scored, it would not have been possible without some spectacular play by the sensational Rodrygo, who surged past three men inside the six-yard box before squaring to his teammate.

Despite having the majority of possession after that, the visitors appeared to be far more likely to score once they entered the offensive third.

They almost put in a second in the 12th minute, when Marco Asensio was sent through on goal on the right side of the penalty area after a rapid counter attack. Asensio side-footed a feeble effort goalward, which was tame enough for Jeremias Ledesma to comfortably save.

Oussama Idrissi raced into the box in the 35th minute, giving Cadiz their first clear-cut chance. Lunin saved the former Sevilla striker’s effort brilliantly, diving to his left to deflect the ball wide of the post.

Moments later, the home team deservedly scored. It would come from Sobrino, who seized onto Eder Militao’s clumsy headed clearance before cannoning the ball off the upright and into the net.

Real reclaimed control of the game at the opening of the second half, with Toni Kroos taking command of the tempo from the middle of the park. They feared they would lose it in the 60th minute when Lunin brought down Negredo inside the box and gave away a penalty.

Fortunately for Los Blancos, Lunin made the correct prediction to save the ensuing penalty kick, diving to his right to deny the former Middlesbrough player.

After being sent through on goal by Lucas Perez five minutes later, Negredo wasted another chance to give his team the lead, as his left-footed shot was stopped by the impressive Lunin.

The game’s next opportunity would fall to another Cadiz player, this time Sobrino. From eight yards out, the attacker rose highest to connect with a corner kick, but could only head the ball over the crossbar.

In the end, Cadiz could only take a point against the champions and dropped into the relegation zone following Mallorca’s late victory over Rayo Vallecano. Cadiz will play Alaves, who were relegated by Levante on the final day of the relegation struggle.

However, on the evidence of their valiant performance against the league’s best side, Cadiz will fancy their chances against the team at the bottom of La Liga.
