SAN FRANCISCO, October 26, (THEWILL) – The Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID), has called for calm, amidst the looting of the COVID-19 palliatives.

The Coalition who expressed concern over the ongoing looting of the palliatives urged those involved in the “wanton destruction of public and private properties to desists” from the raids of Warehouses in order to allow the states to proceed with peaceful and fair distribution of the palliatives to the most vulnerable.”

A statement on Monday signed by Osita Nwasinobi on behalf of the Coalition said the “nationwide food programme and the timing of the order of deliveries to States coincided with the COVID-19 lockdown.” It added that the lockdown which restricted movements across states compelled CACOVID to roll out distribution in a “staggered manner.”

The statement further explained that CACOVID food package was designed such that each of the “nearly two million vulnerable families targeted received 10kg bag of rice, 5kg of garri/maize/flour/semolina, a cartoon of pasta, 2 cartoons of noodles, 5kg of sugar and 1kg of salt.”

CACOVID said that the very large order of the palliative caused delays in delivery to the various state governments until June when it made the first delivery.

The coalition further explained that a sizable number of the palliatives were delivered to the State in October. “Only States which received in August and had begun distribution of palliatives to people.”

The Coalition said it worked with the States through the Nigerian Governor’s Forum (NGF) to determine the “number of households, clean and secured warehousing for food, composition of committees and guidelines for distribution of palliatives.”

CACOVID disclosed that the official flagging of and handover of the palliatives has taken place in 28 states and the FCT, “and state government have been distributing at various paces.”

The coalition decried the looting of the palliatives as the action has deprived many of the targeted persons from getting the palliatives.

CACOVID further clarified that not every warehouse that has palliatives are from the coalition as the Federal Government and other organizations also made donations.

CACOVID therefore appealed for calm for states to be allowed to proceed with their palliative distribution peacefully.

The coalition urged the public to disregard “any unauthorized sources of information regarding the current issue.”
