BEVERLY HILLS, May 25, (THEWILL) – A businesswoman was shot dead on Tuesday afternoon as gunmen and security operatives engaged in a gun duel in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The shoot-out occurred during an attack on the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters.
The woman, who sold provisions at Hardel Junction, Orji, near the scene of the incident was hit by a bullet while she was in her shop.
Her corpse was lying on the floor as her relatives and neighbours wailed helplessly.
The victims, who was in her 60s was a grandmother, a source said.
Also, another person was hit by a stray bullet on her leg.
The girl was said to be filming the scenario when there stray bullet hit her in the legs.
THEWILL reports that gunmen had attacked and razed down the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters on Owerri-Okigwe Road in Owerri, on Tuesday.
The attack, which however was repelled by reinforcing security operatives made up of soldiers, policemen and Air Force, saw heavy exchange of gunfire between the assailants and security operatives.
The situation caused panic in the area as two banks situated close to the scene hurriedly shut down.
Businessmen fled, vehicles diverted while motorists scampered for safety as they fled from their vehicles.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen attacked the police station after blocking the expressway with their vehicles.
They were said to have told nearby traders not to panic.
