BEVERLY HILLS, March 25, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari has told his political associates and leaders of the his party, All Progressives Congress, APC, that Senator Ahmed Lawan, the senator representing Yobe North, is his preferred choice for President of the 9th Senate, THEWILL can report.

Multiple sources familiar with the president’s decision told THEWILL that Buhari hinted key leaders of the party of his decision a few days after INEC declared the result for the presidential and national assembly elections, which returned both Buhari and Lawan for another term.

“The President told me specifically that Senator Lawan is his candidate and that I should mobislize support for him,” one influential politician who asked not be identified told THEWILL.

President Buhari Monday held a meeting with APC governors and senators-elect to ensure a strong bond between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in the next administration.

THEWILL recalls that Lawan, who is presently the Leader of the Senate, was the president’s choice for the office in 2015, but was edged out by incumbent Senator Bukola Saraki and his group in a move that embarrassed the presidency and the ruling party.

Saraki was roundly defeated in the 2019 general election so will not be returning to the senate though THEWILL gathered he is plotting to block Lawan from succeeding him.

APC chairman, Adams Oshiomhole Monday boasted that the ruling party would not enter into any power sharing deal with the opposition in the national assembly.

The APC will enjoy a clear majority in the Senate having won 65 seats while the PDP has 40 seats out of the 109 seats available from the results declared by INEC.

APC also won 230 seats out of the 360 seats in the House of Representatives.
