August 31, (THEWILL) – North London Premiership side Arsenal have announced the termination of the contract of their Brazilian winger and attacking midfielder, Willian Borges da Silva, by mutual agreement on Monday.
The 33-year-old moved to the Emirates on a three-year deal after leaving Chelsea last summer.
After 38 appearances across all competitions for Mikel Arteta’s side last season, he is yet to feature in the current campaign for the Gunners.
Yet, the Brazilian winger has been pocketing £240,000 out of the Arsenal wage bill all the while.
Now, to facilitate a move to Corinthians from the Emirates, Willian has reached an agreement with the club to terminate that contract.
The official statement from Arsenal, posted on the club’s website on Monday, said: “We have reached a mutual agreement with Willian to terminate his contract effective from today. The Brazil international joined us from Chelsea last August and made 38 appearances during the 2020/21 campaign.
“He had two more years to run on his contract but following positive and constructive recent discussions with him and his team, he will be leaving for a new opportunity with Corinthians in Brazil, where he began his career.
“Everyone at Arsenal wishes Willian and his family well for the future. The contract termination is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.”
It is a move that will save Arsenal up to £20.5m, as Willian has also decided to take a 70 per cent pay cut to return to his former club.
The gesture left Arsenal directors amazed by the gentlemanly consideration of Willian.
The Brazilian was always one of exemplary professional conduct since he moved to the EPL eight years ago from the Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. His gesture shows that he wants to leave English football with his head held high.
