BEVERLY HILLS, June 09, (THEWILL) – The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has pulled out of the race to host the FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The federation pulled out with just two weeks to the announcement of the successful host for the competition saying it did not sign guarantees necessary to hold the event because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federation says it will now support Colombia’s bid to host the event.
“Economic and fiscal austerity” contributed to the decision. In view of the exceptional time experienced by the country and the world, CBF understands the cautious position of the Brazilian Government, and of other public and private partners, which prevented them from formalising the commitments within the time or in the required manner,” the federation said in a statement on its website.
THEWILL reports that the winning bid will be announced on June 25.
