SAN FRANCISCO, November 06, (THEWILL) – Against the general expectation that the Boko Haram insurgency would have resulted in the desertion of Yobe State by foreign medical doctors, the state government disclosed on Wednesday that a total of 57 medical doctors comprising 14 Koreans, 12 Egyptians and 29 indigenous ones who are “presently on ground performing their professional duties for the state ” are still in the service of the state government.
The state government therefore called on doctors who are still interested in working in the state to apply for employment , saying the government is still willing to employ more health personnel .
Disclosing this while speaking to journalists in Damaturu, the state capital, the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Kaigama Umar, said “all the foreign doctors working in the state are on ground and serving in their areas of specialisation.”
According to Umar, “All the foreign doctors in the state are manning their various hospitals by working assiduously to save lives and none has run away because of the security challenges bedeviling the state.”
He assured that the Governor Ibrahim Gaidam administration is committed to the repositioning of the health sector in line with the campaign promises made as he disclosed that three hospitals in the state are currently under renovation and will be equipped upon completion to serve the health needs of the people.
He also disclosed that between three to four more hospitals will be renovated and equipped in the second phase of the repositioning exercise .
The commissioner said the Ibrahim Gaidam administration has been spending the sum of N20 million on a monthly basis for the free medical programme for pregnant women, children within the ages of zero-five as well as accident victims.
