October 3, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling 1-1 draw on Sunday, Karim Benzema missed a late penalty as Real Madrid saw their perfect start to La Liga come to an end against 10-man Osasuna.
Madrid was without some first-team players at the Santiago Bernabeu due to injuries to Luka Modric and Thibaut Courtois, but they were fortunate to take the lead when Vinicius Junior’s cross beat Sergio Herrera.
Andriy Lunin, filling in for Courtois, was beaten by Kike Garcia’s header as Osasuna tied the score. However, the hosts were awarded a penalty when David Garcia pushed Benzema in the box, earning himself a red card.
Only for Benzema to smash his penalty kick against the crossbar in disappointment. It meant that Madrid’s winning streak had been halted and they were now behind early League leaders Barcelona in the standings.
Before travelling to play Getafe next Saturday, Real Madrid will welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to the Santiago Bernabeu in a UEFA Champions League fixture in midweek. At El Sadar on Friday, Osasuna will host Valencia.
