September 07, (THEWILL) – The lingering twelve months old crisis that hit the Benue State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, has been resolved with the composition of a ten-man transition committee, headed by Vice President Zone D, Comrade Kris Atsaka, as chairman.

Announcing the decision of the meeting during the Special Congress held at the David Ukuma hall at NUJ Secretariat in Makurdi, on Saturday, the president of the union, Chris Isiguzo, who presided over the congress, said as a ‘father’, he will no longer afford to see the divided Benue council, hence the need for resolution.

Although there were varying arguments that the decision of the congress will impinge on the decision of the Industrial Court, members observed that all the orders of the court were respected, saying the interest of the union was paramount.

The NUJ president, therefore, appealed to all parties to make sacrifices and sheathe their swords, to allow peace to return for the benefit of all.

He charged the ten-man transition committee to be neutral and restore sanity, as well as heal the wounds and conduct an election, that all qualified members intending to contest will test their popularity at the polls.

The Vincent Nyinongu-led chairmanship with Frank Ihyundu, as vice chairman, with Nabem Dabul, as secretary, collapsed alongside the Jerry Tyosase-led committee, while the Zone D secretary, Comrade Aji Abdul, was to serve as transition committee Secretary.

However, soon after the inauguration, Comrade Vincent Nyinongu and Dabul Nabem, have distanced themselves from the congress decision, describing it as an abuse of their fundamental rights, having been duly elected at a congress for a tenure of three years.

They pledged to seek redress before a court of competent jurisdiction within a reasonable time.

Responding on behalf of other members of the committee, Comrade Kris Atsaka thanked members of the council for burying their hatchets for the good of the union.

He promised to restore peace, harmony, and progress, calling on members to cooperate with the committee in the course of duty.

It will be recalled that Comrade Orduen Dura, of the Benue State Ministry of Information chapel, went to court, seeking interpretation as to whether the national Secretariat of NUJ has powers to clear those disqualified by the credentials screening committee to participate in the Benue NUJ election, July 2021.
