December 28, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have allegedly concluded that Ben Chilwell’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which he sustained against Juventus in the Champions League match, will require surgery.
The implication is that the England full-back will almost probably miss the remainder of the season after sustaining the knee injury during Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Juventus in late November.
Chilwell had been in excellent form since recovering his spot in the team, scoring four goals for both club and country before the incident.
THEWILL recalls that the Englishman had a terrible start to the season and openly expressed his frustration with his lack of involvement in England’s march to the Euro 2020 final. He is now set to miss the remainder of the 2021/2022 campaign of the Blues.
Now, the Champions League holders may try to add a player to the squad as cover at left-back/left-wing back during the upcoming transfer window, with Lucas Digne of Everton being widely seen as one option.
Tuchel has used Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Saul, and Christian Pulisic as wide left backups since Marcos Alonso’s injury, with variable results. The gaffer had anticipated Chilwell’s absence would be only short, announcing at the time of the injury that the club will review the situation in six weeks.
