Belgium Qualify For Qatar 2022 After 3-1 Win Over Estonia

November 14, (THEWILL) – Christian Benteke, standing in for the injured Romelu Lukaku, scored a rare international goal to help Belgium defeat Estonia, securing a spot in the 2022 World Cup for the Red Devils.

Estonian goalkeeper, Matvei Igonen, allowed Yannick Carrasco’s cross to slither under his arm, and the Crystal Palace attacker, was in the right place at the right time to pounce on that goalkeeping blunder and give Belgium an 11th-minute lead. It was the 30-year-old’s first goal in two years for Belgium.

Just moments later, Igonen made amends for his error by stretching himself far enough to deflect Kevin De Bruyne’s superb free-kick into the crossbar.

Belgium had nearly 80% control but had only that 1-0 advantage at halftime as Eden Hazard fluffed his lines when released through the middle with only the goalkeeper to beat.

After the restart, Belgium took just eight minutes to extend their lead, in stark contrast to their shabby start. Carrasco was given space on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a rocket into the top corner.

With 20 minutes remaining, Estonia, seemingly out of nowhere, cut the deficit. Thibaut Courtois could only parry Rauno Sappinen’s attempt, and Erik Sorga tucked it home on the rebound.

Thorgan Hazard, who came on at the hour mark to replace his brother, scored four minutes later when he was left unmarked at the back post to head home De Bruyne’s cross.

Alexis Saelemaekers had the presence of mind to score with a spectacular effort with the outside of the boot, but it was chalked off for offside.

With just one game remaining in Group E, Belgium now has a five-point lead over second-placed Wales.
