Bayern Trounce Bochum 7-0 With New Lewandowski Record

September 18, (THEWILL) – Bavarian giants Bayern Munich were in atypical blistering form as they routed Bundesliga newsboys Bochum 7-0 at the Allianz Arena to continue their goal rush in the Bundesliga campaign so far, with 20 goals in five matches.

It began with Leroy Sane’s brilliant and superb 25-yard free-kick in the 17th minute and did not ease until the 79th minute as none of the goal-scorers, except Joshua Kimmich, managed more than one on the way to Bayern’s seventh straight win.

It was a more terrible day for Bochum’s Vasilios Lampropoulos, who had his name in the scoresheet for all the wrong reasons as his own goal, which came from panic under pressure, capped off a torrid first half for Bochum, with Kimmich and Serge Gnabry having netted before him.

Robert Lewandowski continued to set records. His goal in the second half, when he nudged home from a yard out after Sane’s cutback was diverted into his path, made him the first player in Bundesliga history to net in 13 consecutive home matches, and Kimmich helped himself to a second before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting got in on the act to complete trouncing.

A substitute for the visitors, Silvere Ganvoula, thought he had snatched a consolation and was already celebrating with his teammates only for the offside flag to douse their excitement. There was time for a Thomas Muller late goal to make it 8-0 but after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, referee Tobias Welz disallowed the goal for offside.

Bayern had an initial hiccup against under Julian Nagelsmann when they drew 1-1 against Borussia Monchengladbach and it was not a good start coming after an unsteady preseason. Since then, it had been seven wins on the bounce for the champions with a plethora of goals.

To sweeten his new time at the job at the Allianz Arena, just this past week he has beaten both his former side RB Leipzig and La Liga giants Barcelona.

Under Nagelsmann, this 7-0 is largest margin of victory in the Bundesliga keeping Bayern sitting pretty at the top of the table for the time being depending on what Wolfsburg plays on Sunday against Eintracht Frankfurt

For Lewandowski, another record of Gerd Muller lies in his sight. The Pole has now scored in 15 successive Bundesliga matches and will be looking at matching the late, great Bayern legend who scored in 16 in a row. But, he set a record by overtaking two greats in Muller and Jupp Heynckes, by scoring in a 13th straight home match in the league.
