October 21, (THEWILL) – Following his side’s Champions League Group E victory over Benfica on Wednesday night, Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for coronavirus.

Nagelsmann was absent from the touchline despite having travelled to Lisbon with his team due to a ‘flu-like infection,’ according to the club. Despite being fully vaccinated, Nagelsmann tested positive for COVID-19 before returning to Munich on Thursday morning.

The club has confirmed that their coach will return to Bavaria in a “medical plane” and isolate upon his arrival.

Nagelsmann was said to have contracted the illness at the team hotel and had decided not to travel with his team to the stadium as a precaution.

The club made this known in a tweet that said: “Julian Nagelsmann has tested positive for Coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated. He will fly back to Munich separately from the team in a medical plane and isolate back there.”

Although the symptoms will be far less severe in most cases, a fully vaccinated individual can still test positive for the virus.

In their UEFA Champions League fixture, after being frustrated by a stubborn home side and VAR in the Portuguese capital, Bayern scored four goals in 14 second-half minutes to win 4-0.

On 70 minutes, Leroy Sané scored a beautiful knuckleball free kick, before an own goal and a Robert Lewandowski tap-in made it 3-0. In the 84th minute, Sané completed the scoring by side-footing home to complete a sweeping counterattack.
