Bayelsa United On Winning Side As CAF Confederations Cup First Leg Matches Hold

October 18, (THEWILL) – Three matches were played in the first leg matches of the 2021-22 TotalEnergies CAF Confederations Cup Second Preliminary Round on Sunday.

In Yenagoa, Nigeria’s Bayelsa United defeated Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, while Interclube of Angola and DC Motema Pembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo both won away from home in Madagascar and Rwanda, respectively.

In the first tie, Bayelsa United of Nigeria had a pleasant evening in Yenagoa, defeating three-time Confederation Cup champions CS Sfaxien 1-0. In the first half, Bayelsa had a number of chances, with Tunisian goalkeeper Mohamed Gaaloul saving his team on several occasions.

Victory Beniangba scored the game’s lone goal at the hour mark, giving Bayelsa a crucial home victory. The return leg will take place next weekend in Sfax.

Elsewhere, DR Congo visitors DC Motema Pembe returned from Rwanda’s capital with a crucial 2-1 away win over AS Kigali, putting them in a commanding position ahead of the return leg in Kinshasa.

Apionom Kassereka took advantage of an AS Kigali defensive blunder to put the visitors ahead in the eighth minute. Kati Kurondi doubled their lead in first-half injury time to put them up 2-0 at the break.

Two minutes after the hour mark, AS Kigali pulled one back through Burundian Pierrot Kwizera. The hosts were unable to equalise despite numerous chances from Shaban Hussein, Aboubakar Lawal, and Abbedy Biramahire.

In the final fixture, Interclube de Luanda of Angola advanced to the Additional Second Preliminary Round with a 3-0 win over CFFA of Madagascar in Antananarivo.

Interclube took the lead after 11 minutes when Mano Calesso scored, and Mano Mano doubled the lead three minutes later.

Interclube will go into the second leg in Luanda with a commanding lead to defend. Mano Mano completed his brace with twelve minutes remaining after the break.
