October 22, (THEWILL) – The news making the rounds about Paris Saint-Germain’s French forward have linked him again to a move to La Liga for the umpteenth time but to a rival club this time around.

The 22-year-old superstar is yet to sign a contract extension so far having refused all offers made and is widely expected to leave the French giants at the end of the 2021/2022 season.

Up until now, La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid have been courting the France international very publicly, much to the chagrin of PSG Sporting Director Leonardo Araujo.

Les Parisiens are hopeful that Mbappe’s contract will be extended, but the transfer saga could take another turn as it has been revealed that Barcelona, Madrid’s La Liga rival, appear to be considering a move.

According to some reports in the Spanish media, the cash-strapped Catalan side believes they can actually enter into the fray and outspend Madrid to sign Mbappe from PSG for a tidy one-upmanship of their domestic rivals.

Despite their financial difficulties, the Catalans plan to steal Mbappe from Real when he becomes a free agent in mid-2022. By that time, Barcelona’s salary cap will have increased, and vice president Eduard Romeu is expected to make one major signing.

The question to consider is the French forward’s career ambitions and whether he sees a future with Los Blancos or with the Catalan club.

Even if La Blaugrana is able to pony up the cash to compete for Mbappe’s services and wrest him away from PSG, the dream of representing Real, combined with the benefit of playing with international strike partner Karim Benzema, may be too strong a draw for Mbappe to give Barca a chance.

This news, however, will not sit well with Leonardo, much like Real’s insistence on bringing Mbappe to Madrid did not go down well with the Sporting Director.

It is unclear whether he will publicly criticise Barcelona or wait until a Barca official declares their intentions, as he did with Real President Florentino Perez.
