October 26, (THEWILL) – Barcelona will face Boca Juniors in a December tribute match to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Diego Maradona’s death, the two teams confirmed on Monday.
A statement from Barcelona regarding the tie read: “FC Barcelona and Club Atletico Boca Juniors will play the ‘Maradona Cup’ on Dec. 14, a game to pay tribute to the star Diego Armando Maradona when the first anniversary of his death is remembered.”
Boca confirmed their participation in the match, which would be held at Mrsool Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
After fighting health concerns and following emergency surgery for a subdural haematoma, Maradona died of a heart attack on Nov. 25, 2020.
The Argentine legend enjoyed an illustrious career with Barca and Boca. He also notably led Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
