Awoniyi Scores In Union Defeat Of Frankfurt To Overtake Okocha’s Bundesliga Record

April 18, (THEWILL) – On Easter Sunday, Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi helped Union Berlin move up to sixth place in the German Bundesliga rankings with the first goal of a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at the An der Alten Försterei Stadium.

Taiwo Awoniyi shrugged off tackles from Martin Hinteregger and Evan N’Dicka and blasted past the Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper in the 17th minute to break the deadlock.

In doing so, Awoniyi increased his Bundesliga goal tally to 13 for the season, setting a new club record for most Bundesliga goals in a single season.

Sebastian Andersson set the previous record of twelve goals in the 2019-2020 season, but Awoniyi tied that score on April 1, 2022, when he scored against Cologne.

With 19 Union Berlin goals, the 2013 Under-17 World Cup winner is now the fourth highest-scoring Nigerian in Bundesliga history, surpassing great Eintracht Frankfurt offensive midfielder Austin Okocha, who scored 18 goals in 90 appearances.

In this Sunday’s fixture, Union Berlin’s lead was extended in the 21st minute by Grischa Prömel. Awoniyi might have made it 3-0 three minutes after the hour but his shot went over the crossbar.

Only Nigerian players Jonathan Akpoborie (60 goals), Victor Agali (32) and Anthony Ujah (30) have scored more goals in the Bundesliga than Awoniyi.
