May 13, (THEWILL) – Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele has declined pressure to run for the office of President in the 2023 general elections.

An authoritative government source who spoke anonymously told THEWILL Friday that the apex bank chief withdrew his initial interest after giving it a deep thought and consulting President Muhammadu Buhari.

The source added that “Emefiele has rather chosen to serve out his tenure as Governor of the Central Bank which runs through 2024.”

The clarification ends weeks of suspense and heated debate over the rumoured presidential bid of the maverick bank Governor.

Emefiele had last week rejected an All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms obtained on his behalf by some of the groups urging him to join the presidential race.

Reacting to the controversy generated over the nomination forms, Emefiele had in a series of tweets on Saturday in his verified Twitter handle, said he remained undecided and would make his position known at a later date.

“I am humbled by the growing interest of those asking that I run for the Office of President in the 2023 general elections: I have not come to that decision. I note and salute the sacrifices of those farmers and patriots going as far as raising personal funds and offering me Presidential Nomination Forms: I thank them most profusely”, his tweets, had partly read.

On Thursday, Emefiele had a private meeting with President Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

While details of the closed-door meeting remained confidential, the CBN Governor promised State House Correspondents that he would address the issues about his rumoured presidential aspiration “very soon”.

“You heard me, I said there is no news but there will be news”, he said.

As the All Progressives Congress ends the submission of its nomination forms today, THEWILL authoritatively confirmed that Emefiele has declined calls to join active politics.

Our checks at the National Secretariat of the Party on list of Presidential aspirants that have submitted the nomination forms as at Friday, further revealed that Emefiele had not purchased any of the party’s nomination form except the one earlier obtained by Rice farmers and other support groups seeking to enlist him into the race.

The form was not also submitted as the CBN Governor had earlier rejected it.
