SAN FRANCISCO, January 27, (THEWILL) – Gabonese international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, captain of English Premier League side Arsenal has expressed his appreciation to fans for the support he has received during his absence from the team recently.
The 31-year-old missed two consecutive matches for Arsenal against Southampton in the FA Cup and in the Premier League, as it was confirmed that the striker had “personal issues” to deal with and was unavoidably absent.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had said he was unsure when Aubameyang was going to be back in the squad, but the Gabonese released an explanation himself on social media stating clearly why he was absent. He was attending to his mother who was unwell. He also took the opportunity to thank fans that backed him.
“Thank you so much for all the messages and calls over the last few days. My mother is going through some health issues and I had to be there for her,” Aubameyang explained.
“She’s already much better now and I will be back home tonight. I’m more than grateful for the doctors and nurses helping her get through this.
“And of course, thanks to my Arsenal fam for the support yesterday! I’m more determined than ever to keep our momentum going!
“Thank you all again – I really am beyond blessed to receive this level of support and love from all of you and I can’t wait to be back.”
In his absence, Arsenal were knocked out of the fourth round of the FA Cup last weekend by EPL side Southampton, bringing their defence of the Cup to an end. But, in the second tie, a league fixture, Arsenal came from behind to win 3-1 at St Mary’s, all without their high-scoring captain.
He will return to join the team but it will depend on his match-readiness to know if he can feature for the Gunners in their next encounter against Manchester United.
