November 28, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid won a crucial away match against Cadiz thanks to goals from Thomas Lemar, Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa, and Matheus Cunha, closing the distance on Real Madrid at the top of La Liga to just one point.
Diego Simeone’s team came into the match with two poor results against Valencia and AC Milan, but they rebounded to go into second position.
The visitors dominated the first half but struggled to produce many goalscoring opportunities, though Luis Suarez should have scored but his shot from inside the box went over the bar.
However, 16 minutes into the second half, the visitors took the lead when Lemar headed home a dangerous Yannick Carrasco delivery into the middle from the left.
At about the 70th minute, Griezmann increased the lead for the Spanish champions, scooping home a first-time effort from 12 yards after superb work down the right flank by Lemar and Marcos Llorente.
Before a weird Jan Oblak gaffe offered Cadiz some late hope of completing an impossible comeback, Correa came off the bench to score Atleti’s third goal of the game.
Atletico Madrid put an end to those ambitions with a fourth goal from Cunha, as the defending Spanish champions made a statement of purpose ahead of a crucial run of games against Porto, Real Madrid, and Sevilla before Christmas.
The Cadiz side will return to action in the Copa del Rey on Thursday against Villa de Fortuna, followed by a La Liga tie against Elche the following weekend. Atletico Madrid will have a week off before hosting Mallorca in their next match.
