July 25, (THEWILL) – A social media campaign has been launched by some Atletico Madrid supporters, to express their collective outrage at the team’s alleged interest to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
After only one season at Old Trafford, the Portuguese superstar is planning to quit Manchester United this summer. While clubs like Chelsea and Bayern Munich, had looked into offers for him, they were quick to withdraw interest in a prospective transfer this summer.
Atletico Madrid, became the latest top side to reportedly reveal interest in signing Ronaldo and the La Liga club is prepared to part with Antoine Griezmann, in order to make room on their payroll for Ronaldo but this has not gone over well with some of their supporters, who do not want their team to sign a player whose legacy is closely associated with city rivals Real Madrid.
In order to express their opposition to Ronaldo, Atletico supporters have begun an online campaign with the hashtag “#ContraCR7” and it quickly became popular over the weekend in Spain.
In his lengthy and illustrious career, Ronaldo faced Atletico Madrid 37 times, his most frequent opponent, and he defeated Los Rojiblancos 17 times in all. He was also a key contributor to Real Madrid’s victories against their local rivals in the 2014 and 2016 UEFA Champions League finals. They got one back though when they eliminated Man Utd last season at the round of 16.
