BEVERLY HILLS, February 18, (THEWILL) – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has approved the AstraZeneca Vaccine for use in Nigeria.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, said the agency got the dossier of the vaccine a week ago, while its safety committee went to work immediately to evaluate its safety and efficacy for Nigerians.
While affirming that the vaccine could be stored under two to eight degrees Centigrade conditions, she explained that there were three additional vaccines undergoing evaluation.
Adeyeye said the evaluation on AstraZeneca showed it was effective against the United Kingdom variant of the virus reported in Nigeria.
The NAFDAC DG stressed that the South African variant had not been reported in Nigeria, while the agency had over 30 herbal medicines undergoing review for listing.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently approved AstraZeneca vaccine for emergency use to curtail the spread of COVID-19.
