October 03, (THEWILL) – After their treble-winning campaign last season, Barcelona Femeni began this season with the same determination to brush aside any team in front of them, a fact that Alavés learnt the hard way, conceding nine goals in their Sunday meeting with the champions of the Primera Iberdrola.
However, in the matchday five fixture at the Estadi Johan Cruyff grounds of the Catalan side, the hosts had to play catch-up after American midfielder Jordan Clark put the Basques ahead from an early set piece. The 16th minor opener was the first goal Barca had conceded all season.
But, after the woodwork got in the way of their best chance to get back into it, Barca began to turn the game around, beginning with Bruna Vilamala in the 28th minute, before Lieke Martens and Ana Maria Crnogorcevic made it 3-1n by halftime.
Mariona Caldentey, Caroline Graham Hansen, and Melanie Serrano piled on the misery after the restart allowing Barca to quickly open a five-goal gap before the hour mark. Yet, that did not sate their goal-scoring appetite.
Super Falcons’ Asisat Oshoala was introduced into the game in the 64th minute for Fridolina Rolfo just as Barca went into overdrive. Goals from Claudia Pina and Jana Fernández took it to 8-1 before Oshoala capped off the superlative display with an 84th minute goal.
As a result, Barça’s perfect La Liga record remains intact, as they prepare for their first Champions League match against the ladies from English Premier League side Arsenal on Tuesday.
