Asisat Oshoala’s Barca Team Clinch 6th Women’s League Title Ahead of UWCL Final

BEVERLY HILLS, May 09, (THEWILL) – It is one down and one to go for Asisat Oshoala’s Primera Iberdrola club Barcelona Femini but what a massive one it is as the Catalan Ladies have retained the league title in Tenerife, after they made it 26 wins from 26 games for a 100% record.
The complete and total domination that the Oshoala and her teammates have had in the league this season has been unmatched. They have outscored and outplayed every opponent in these 26 matches with a truckload of goals that they boast of a stunning goal difference of 123, having 128 and conceded only five.
The second-placed side, Levante managed to score only 59 and conceded 38 to put Barca’s superiority in perspective. On Sunday, while Barca stomped all over UD Granadilla Tenerife Sur to take another three points, Levante stumbled at Espanyol allowing Barca enough points to defend their title.
As Levante can no longer mathematically catch up with Barca, the Catalans will be celebrating their second consecutive title through the night. It confers on Oshoala’s club their sixth Primera Iberdrola title in the club’s history. They have shown unwavering determination from their first title in 2012 with repeated successes in 2013, 2014 and 2015. But, they had to wait until 2020 before they got another one.
Now, the 2021 trophy returns to Catalonia and the Super Falcons’ captain played a strong hand in this outcome. As the third highest goal-scorer for the season, Oshoala contributed 15 goals to the tally, behind Alexia Putellas’ 16 and Jennifer Hermoso’s 21.
This is what will draw the attention of the media most, the record-breaking feat of this Barça team. The unprecedented team run of 26 straight victories to title. Now, the champions have 30 (25 + 5) across the last two seasons, equalling Levante’s record between 2000/01 and 2001/02.
Their record-equaling performance is bettered by their Primera Iberdrola record of the most league titles. The six-time champions have now surpassed Athletic Club’s five titles with whom they were previously tied to lead the all-time list for the first time.
However, the biggest challenge lies ahead as they prepare to face Chelsea Ladies in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final on May 16, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
