BEVERLY HILLS, January 13, (THEWILL) – The Kano State government plans to disinfect all poultry farms and markets as part of measures to curb the spread of the recent outbreak of bird flu in the state.

This was disclosed by the Director, Veterinary services in the state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Shehu Bawa, who told NAN, on Friday, that the state government had approved money for the department to procure more disinfectants.

“We are lucky since the disease resurfaced about one month ago, only two farms in Kumbotso local government area were infected with the disease,” he said.

The director said the department had also stepped up surveillance in all markets with a view to preventing people from selling infected birds to unsuspecting members of the public.

On compensation, Bawa said the Federal Government had promised to pay all those farmers affected by the disease in 2014/2015 and 2015 /2016 adding that modalities were also being worked out for payment to affected farmers in future.

Meanwhile, Giyan Joshua-Ndom, the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, Nasarawa State, has confirmed that a patient at the centre was suffering from a disease suspected to be Lassa fever.

Joshua-Ndom told NAN, on Friday, that the centre had reported the matter to the Ministry of Health as well as the Centre for Diseases Control, Abuja.

“It is true that a suspected case of Lassa fever had been discovered at the centre with a male patient being its victim.

“But, I want to use this medium to appeal to patients and members of the public to remain calm as necessary steps had been taken to avert the spread of the virus.

“The patient with the suspected case of Lassa fever had been separated from other patients and we are on top of the situation to curtail the spread of the disease,” he said
