Aruna Carries Nigeria’s Commonwealth Medal Hope To Tennis Semi-Finals

July 31, (THEWILL) – Nigeria defeated Malaysia 3-2 in Saturday’s men’s team quarter-finals at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games to advance to the semi-finals, keeping their hopes for medals alive.

Javen took the opening set 11-7 and was pushing to wrap up the game quickly but for Quadri Aruna, Nigeria’s best tennis player and the highest ranked African, who mounted a comeback by winning the last three sets 8-11, 5-11, and 9-11 to seal Nigeria’s place in the semifinals at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre.

Comparatively, Malaysia got off to a strong start in the team’s event. Javen and his partner Wong Qi Shen defeated Amadi Omeh-Bode Abiodun by 6-11, 12-10, 12-10, and 11-7. Again, Aruna stepped up for Nigeria to beat Leong Chee Feng 11-9, 6-11, 11-5, and 11-5 to give Nigeria victory.
