Arsenal Terminates Contract With Greek International Papastathopoulos

BEVERLY HILLS, January 20, (THEWILL) – English Premier League side Arsenal FC has announced the termination of the contract with Greek centre back Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The two parties reached an agreement to bring an end to the defender’s career with the Gunners.

The 32-year-old arrived North London from the Bundesliga’s Borussia Dortmund in 2018. In his debut campaign, he made 40 appearances in all competitions. However, his initial success, was followed by a slide down the pecking order under new manager Mikel Arteta. He ended with only handful of appearances after the Spaniard took over in December 2019.

Any chances he had left of making it under the new Gunners’ management completely evaporated when Arteta left him out of his 25-man Premier League squad, alongside Mesut Ozil, this season. If he needed to be informed that his time with the club was coming to an end, that was the clearest signal.

On Wednesday, Arsenal released a statement, that confirmed it: “Working closely with Sokratis and his team, we have decided to cancel his contract by mutual consent.

“This gives Papa the freedom to negotiate a contract with a new club and return to action as soon as possible.”

Arsenal’s Technical director Eduardo “Edu” Gaspar added: “On behalf of Mikel, our coaches, players and everyone at the club, I would like to thank Papa for his contribution to the club.

“He has been an important part of our group and has been a model professional throughout. The negotiations to end his contract have been collaborative and we wish Papa and his family well for the future.”

Departures from the Gunners squad have made the news recently with the confirmation of Ozil’s Fernabache move. The World Cup winner has linked up with Fenerbahce, who beat off competition from DC United and a host of Turkish sides to secure his signature and fulfill Ozil’s dreams of representing his boyhood club.

These exits will help the Emirates free up “deadwood” wages enabling Arsenal to dip into the transfer market for reinforcements. Several names have already been lined up as Arteta aspires for greater creativity in his squad. One of these names is Norwich star Emiliano Buendia.
