September 26, (THEWILL) – Ronald Araujo, the Barcelona centre-back, will have thigh surgery on Wednesday, effectively ruling him out of the World Cup in Qatar this year.
The defender’s issue was added to Barca’s injury list over the weekend, raising questions about the possibility of him playing for Uruguay in the end-of-year football showpiece.
Earlier this month, Uruguay pressured Barcelona to put off any surgery so the 23-year-old would have the best opportunity of competing in Qatar.
However, the Catalan team has now confirmed that he will undergo surgery. A three-month layoff is expected to follow, which will definitely ensure he plays no part in the World Cup.
A club statement of the surgery read: “Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery on Wednesday for the adductor longus tendon avulsion he has in his right thigh,” read a club statement on Monday. The operation will be carried out by Dr. Lasse Lempainen, under the supervision of the club’s medical staff, in Turku, Finland.”
