April 26, (THEWILL) – Ronald Araujo has extended his contract with Barcelona until 2026, pledging his future to the club.

The Uruguayan international has established himself as one of Barça’s most essential players, starting with Gerard Pique in central defence ahead of Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti.

With his previous contract set to end in 2023, Araujo had been linked with a move away from Catalonia. Manchester United and Liverpool were rumoured to be interested in signing the defender, but Barça has now announced that fresh terms have been reached.

The following is a quote from the club’s statement: “FC Barcelona and the player Ronald Araujo have reached an agreement to renew his contract until 30 June 2026. The buy out clause stipulated is set at €1bn.”

In recent months, Barcelona has been pursuing new contracts for some of their younger players. Ansu Fati and Pedri, both teenagers, have long-term contracts with the club, and the club expects to do additional business before the season is over.

Before the season concludes, Xavi’s side hopes to finalise a new contract for midfield prodigy Gavi. The 17-year-old has had a breakout season for both club and country, making regular appearances at Camp Nou and making his Spain debut.

They will be bolstered even further by some summer recruits. Andreas Christensen, a free agent from Chelsea, is expected to join. Cesar Azpilicueta has also been linked with a move to Barça, despite the fact that the Spaniard’s contract was recently extended for another year by the Blues.
