August 31, (THEWILL) – Alfred Schreuder, the head coach at Ajax, believes that Manchester United’s target, Antony, “is not worth” the €100 million that the Red Devils are offering for him.
On Tuesday afternoon, United announced that they and Ajax had reached an agreement regarding the transfer of Antony. The deal is expected to be finalised following the completion of personal terms, a medical exam, and the receipt of a work permit.
With Antony on his way to Old Trafford, Schreuder has criticised how football is governed by such enormous sums of money. Schreuder had long insisted that the Dutch champions would not sell the Brazil international this window.
He said: “Today, the amounts are crazy. Barcelona paid €115m for [Ousmane] Dembele, Manchester United also paid more than €100m for [Jadon] Sancho. Then you can pay that for him [Antony] too. Are the players worth it? No. But it will be paid.”
Following Antony’s explosive interview last Friday, in which he begged Ajax to let him leave, Schreuder described Antony’s actions as “strange” especially after the player skipped a number of training sessions in recent weeks. When questioned whether Antony may be penalised for his actions during his last few weeks at the club, Schreuder said: “Absolutely.”
