June 01, (THEWILL) – With a hard-fought 6-4 6-4 4-6 7-6(7) victory, Alexander Zverev terminated Carlos Alcaraz’s impressive run at the French Open, advancing to the semi-finals for the second year in a row.
Despite his superior seeding, Zverev was considered an outsider by the bookmakers heading into his quarter-final match against the number six seed, largely due to Alcaraz’s form leading up to Roland-Garros.
The 19-year-old had previously defeated Zverev in the Madrid Open final earlier this month in a largely one-sided match where he dropped just four games throughout.
However, Zverev appeared to be a cut above Alcaraz at Roland Garros, with a superior serving performance. Alcaraz’s high unforced errors count, as well as a vital 9-7 victory in a thrilling fourth-set tie-break, combined to help the German progress.
Zverev will face the winner of epic showdown quarter-final slowdown between Novak Djokovic and 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal, which is set to take place late on Tuesday.
