September 13, (THEWILL) – Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Akwa United, yesterday defeated Algerian champions, CR Belouizdad by a lone goal in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round played at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The lone goal was scored in the 87th minute by Ubong Friday to a rapturous roar from the enthusiastic fans.
During the post-match interview, Akwa United head coach, Kennedy Boboye attributed the win to the players’ commitment in their first run in the CAF Champions League.
Boboye expressed optimism the players would fill the noticeable gaps to ensure they qualify for the next round.
“We approach the match with the determination to win, and it pays off though it was not easy because the Algerians were more experience,” Boboye said.
Also speaking, CR Belouizdad coach, Bekhti Khoum, described the match as tough, adding that his team did not get a chance to implement their game plan.
“Anything can happen in football. We came expected to win but it turned out a different side.
“We did very well but what happen has happened, our players were getting tired in the second half. We moved forward to ensure a good result back home,” he said.
