March 21, (THEWILL) – Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who is based in South Africa, is the latest invitee to join the Super Eagles camp in Abuja, ahead of the senior men’s national football team’s double-header against Ghana in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff.
Odion Ighalo, Leon Balogun, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, William Troost-Ekong, Ahmed Musa and Ola Aina are among the twenty-five players included in the completed squad and have arrived in the country’s capital.
For a starting spot in between the sticks against the Black Stars, the Kaizer Chiefs’ number one, Akpeyi, will contend against Sparta Rotterdam’s Maduka Okoye and Omonia Nicosia’s Francis Uzoho.
Since going the distance in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Lesotho in November 2019, the 35-year-old has not appeared in goal for the Super Eagles.
In nine of the Super Eagles’ previous 10 competitive matches, the former Chippa United player has been named to the matchday roster.
Akpeyi has appeared in twelve games for Kaizer Chiefs in the DSTV Premiership this season, keeping five clean sheets and conceding seven goals.
