BEVERLY HILLS, October 09, (THEWILL) – Senators and members of the House of Representatives, following their resumption on Tuesday, have adjourned plenary over the death of a serving colleague, Honourable Olufunke Adedoyin of Kwara State in line with the practice of the National Assembly (NASS) in the case of the death of a serving legislator.
Adedoyin passed on in Abuja on September 28 after fighting with cancer. She was aged 56.
Until her death, she represented Ekiti/Isin/Irepodun/Oke-ero federal constituency of Kwara state in the house.
The late lawmaker was a former minister of youth development and later minister of state for health.
Adedoyin was one of the lawmakers who defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July.
While members of the lower legislative chamber will resume on Thursday, those in the senate would reconvene on Wednesday.
At both chambers of the national assembly on Tuesday, the senators and representatives observed a one-minute silence in her honour.
Before the upper legislative chamber adjourned, Senate President Bukola Saraki read a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari on his reasons for declining assent to some bills. The amendment of the electoral act was one of the bills rejected by Buhari.
NASS had earlier on Tuesday resumed after it’s long break which it embarked upon on the 24th of July 2018. Most of the lawmakers were however absent.
Also, there is a rejig of the security at the National Assembly as more police officers and police trucks were sighted.
More security men in unidentified uniform were also on the ground with strict instructions not to allow unauthorised persons into the National Assembly.
The National Assembly embarked on its annual recess on July 24 amidst controversies of defection and preparation for party primaries.
It was scheduled to resume on September 25, but this was postponed to October 9 due to the parties primaries.
Before the break, there were some pending issues of national interest before parliament which includes the approval of a supplementary budget to fund the 2018 budget and the 2019 general elections.
The supplementary funds would enable the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to commence preparations for the 2019 polls.
Also pending are several key appointments for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offices (ICPC), Deputy CBN Governor and AMCON, among others.
