AC Milan Hold Steady To Beat Atalanta 3-2 In Bergamo

October 04, (THEWILL) – AC Milan won all three points in a 3-2 victory over Atalanta, at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, to keep pace with Napoli at the top of Serie A.

Over the years, the gap between two local rivals has narrowed, with Atalanta receiving praise for their offensive style of football, which helped them close to within a point of Milan last season.

However, the Bergamo team got off to a bad start, conceding after just 28 seconds. With a brilliantly weighted through pass, Theo Hernandez found fellow wingback Davide Calabria. Calabria’s first shot on goal was stopped, but he made sure of the rebound and tucked it home.

The hosts replied brilliantly, with Duvan Zapata at the heart of their attacks, and could have drawn level if Mike Maignan had not demonstrated his ability to deal with one-on-one situations. Sandro Tonali picked his pocket to go on goal and blast Milan into a comfortable two-goal lead just before halftime.

Atalanta attempted to reclaim control of the game in the second half, but Milan’s well-organized defence made finding space at the back difficult to come by, thus neutralising the hosts’ attacking threat.

The typically high-scoring Atalanta ran out of ideas and energy as the visitors used their experience to take control of the game, scoring a late third goal through Rafael Leao, who slammed the ball past Juan Musso after Hernandez had carried the ball the length of the field.

Atalanta, on the other hand, scored two consolation goals. The first came from Zapata after substitute Junior Messias was adjudged to have blocked the ball inside the box with his hand. The second came in the second half of extra time, when Mario Pasalic took his time to hook the ball over Maignan from close range.

La Dea’s next match is against Empoli on the road, while Milan hosts Verona at the San Siro.

It must seem like an eternity since the Rossoneri fans felt like they were on the verge of something special, but with this group of players, they must believe that the good days are just around the corner.

They are one of the youngest starting XIs in Serie A, but they play with poise and confidence far beyond their years. They made what is usually a difficult match against Atalanta look like a walk in the park at times.
