July 30, (THEWILL) – The Edo State Police Command on Thursday night said the remaining four students of the Naval College of Engineering, Sapele, Delta State and one mechanic, who were kidnapped at Iruekpen, in the Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, have been released by their abductors.

The kidnapped victims, 18 in number, were said to be travelling from Kaduna to Sapele, in two commercial vehicles, when they were intercepted by some gunmen at Iruekpen, close to the university town of Ekpoma.

While the police immediately rose to the occasion and rescued 13 of the kidnapped victims, their abductors took the remaining four students and a mechanic into captivity.

Announcing the release of the remaining four students and a mechanic, the Edo Police Command spokesman, SP Kontongs Bello, in a late Thursday night statement said that the students and the mechanic were freed at about 8:35pm on Thursday by the kidnappers.

While he did not state whether ransom was paid for their release, Kontongs stated that the students declined to let the police profile them as they walked out of sight; noting that the mechanic was being debriefed by the police in Iruekpen.

He said: “Please be informed that the four students of the Naval College of Engineering and one mechanic have been released by their abductors today, Thursday at 20:35hrs.

“The students declined following the police operatives to the station; but the mechanic is being debriefed by the police station in Iruekpen.”
