23 Persons Die, Many Displaced In Benue Flooding – SEMA

September 27, (THEWILL) – Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has confirmed the death of twenty-three persons, as a result of the flooding menace in the state in the past two weeks.

The Executive Secretary of the Agency, Dr. Emmanuel Shior, who made the disclosure while giving an update on the current flooding in Makurdi, on Tuesday, 14 drowned in Guma local government; 2 in Vandeikya; 4 in Katsina-Ala, and 3 in Agatu local government council areas.

According to him, 116,084 persons were affected, while 74 persons were bearing injuries of various degrees.

The SEMA boss explained that a total of 12,586 households were displaced from various communities including Guma, Vandeikya, to Oturkpo, Katsina-Ala, Makurdi, Apa and Agatu, Tarka, Gboko, Gwer West, and Logo.

He said 4,411 houses were lost and submerged with 14,040 hectares of farmland to flooding across the state in the past few weeks of torrential rainfall.

In his remarks, the Principal Search and Rescue Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr John Digha, said the Agency has donated one Water Purifier Truck to Benue state for treatment of water before consumption.

He said the facility was capable of producing 200,000 liters per hour, saying the same truck was sent to Kogi and Jigawa states.
