SAN FRANCISCO, August 21, (THEWILL) – A retaliatory attack by Boko Haram on Borno town of Gwoza and Gamboru/Ngala on Wednesday claimed the lives of 13 persons.

Gamboru/Ngala, a border town with Chad, is a commercial town about 150 kilometres east of Maiduguri, the State capital and Boko Haram stronghold, while Gwoza, a hilly town located some 135 kilometres from Maiduguri, has various outlets into Cameroon.

The insurgents, according to local sources, were apparently out to deal with the community for aiding members of the youth vigilante groups , known as Civilian JTF, who came from Maiduguri to help security operatives in hunting down Boko Haram members, with the assistance of residents of the communities.

A member of Gwoza Emirate Council, who accompanied the Emir of Gwoza to Maiduguri to report the latest attack to the state governor, Alhaji Shettima Ibrahim, on Thursday, told journalists in Maiduguri that two policemen were killed when the insurgents attacked the Gwoza Police Station at about 8am.

He however said seven of the insurgents also died in the clash as the policemen were assisted by men of the Joint Task Force, who repelled the attack.

“The attack at Gamboru/Ngala took place in Fulatari ward at about 2am on Wednesday by suspected Boko Haram members,” a military officer who craved anonymity told journalists.

Residents said the insurgents attacked the town to avenge the arrest of one of their members by the Civilian JTF from Maiduguri who came to inaugurate the volunteer group at Gamboru-Ngala.

“Four persons were killed when the insurgents opened fire on a house while eight people sustained injuries from gunshots,” another resident said.

Gamboru/Ngala, a border town with Chad, is a commercial town about 150 kilometres east of Maiduguri, the State capital and Boko Haram stronghold, while Gwoza, a hilly town located some 135 kilometres from Maiduguri, has various outlets into Cameroon.

THEWILL can report that at least five thousand persons have been killed by the Boko Haram since the insurgency peaked in 2011.
