September 29, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid defeated 10-man AC Milan 2-1 thanks to a penalty from Luis Suarez in the 97th minute of their Group B matchday two fixture of the UEFA Champions League.

The hosts were pushed into action by an electric San Siro crowd as they played their first Champions League home game in seven years. And they were by far the better team, with Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz going close before the latter’s brilliant movement in the box created space for Rafael Leao to open the scoring with a rifled effort past Jan Oblak.

Despite Milan’s domination, Franck Kessie was sent off after two bookable offences within 30 minutes, delivering the advantage to Atletico Madrid. Luis Suarez came close to equalising shortly before halftime with a volleyed effort that flew just inches wide, but Milan held on to go into the break a goal up but a man down.

Luis Suarez came close to scoring once more, hitting a free header over before almost latching onto a Lemar cross. But it was Griezmann, on as a substitute, who equalised for Atletico, latching on to Renan Lodi’s cross and volleying an attempt past Mike Maignan, in the Milan goal.

After that, there was late drama as Atletico secured a penalty kick after a lengthy VAR review to determine whether substitute defender Pierre Kalulu committed a foul in the area. Suarez calmly scored to snatch a very late win.

Unfortunately, AC Milan has been defeated by a late comeback for the second time in Europe, and they remain winless and bottom in their Champions League Group B. Given their performances in both games, it feels terribly unfair. They were fantastic again, but Atletico wore them down, much like Liverpool did the previous time.
