January 09, (THEWILL) – The abridged 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season kicked off on Sunday, with a match between Akwa United and Bendel Insurance, at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.
Prior to kickoff, there was a moment of silence in honour of the deceased former Akwa United Chairman, Obong Isong. The club Chairman died on December 2, 2022.
In the game itself, Bendel Insurance, despite being a newly-promoted team, came out on top with a 2-0 victory over Akwa United. The first goal of the season was scored by Imade Osehenkhoe of Bendel Insurance in the 39th minute, with assistance from midfielder, Devine Nwachukwu.
Just before halftime, Ismael Seriki, doubled the lead for Insurance with a successful poke after an initial save by Akwa United’s goalkeeper, Godsgift Elkanah.
Despite a strong second-half effort, Akwa United was unable to get on the scoreboard and Bendel Insurance secured their win.
