Newcastle Secure 1-0 Victory Over Southampton In EFL Semi-Final First Leg

January 25, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Southampton in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final at St Mary’s stadium.

Despite dominating the match, Eddie Howe’s team were unable to convert their chances in the first half, with shots from Joe Willock and Joelinton sailing over the bar. The home side also had a goal disallowed for handball.

In the second half, both teams had several opportunities to score, with Nick Pope standing tall to deny Che Adams and Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy coming close for Newcastle.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, Isak set up Joelinton to tap in the winner for the visitors. However, Southampton thought they had equalised with a goal from Adam Armstrong, but it was ruled out for handball after a VAR check.

In the dying minutes of the match, Duje Caleta-Car of Southampton was sent off with a second yellow card, leaving the team with ten men for the rest of the tie. Newcastle will take a one-goal lead into the second leg at St James’ Park next week.
