New Naira Notes: CBN Visits Banks In Yenagoa To Ascertain Dispensation

January 19, (THEWILL) – Officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria are visiting commercial banks in Bayelsa State to assess the level of compliance with the CBN’s directive on the issuance of the new Naira notes to customers.

While most of the Automated Teller Machines in the commercial banks in Yenagoa are dispensing the new Naira notes, customers, however, complained about the banks still paying them with the old currencies at the counter.

With few days to the January 31, 2023, deadline set for the old notes to cease as legal tender, the CBN had asked Nigerians to report banks that fail to dispense their Automated Teller Machines with the newly redesigned notes, threatening to sanction banks that fail to comply with the directive.

Our correspondent reports that In one of the old-generation banks, a customer, who gave his name as Tonte from Nembe, while confirming that he was paid with the new Naira notes, however, urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to review the withdrawal limits.

Another customer, Miss Mercy, says the daily withdrawal limits were a major challenge that would have to be reviewed.

A student, Mr. Prosper Ikiomoto, said though he was paid with the new notes, he would also like the withdrawal limits to be removed.

Mr. Ebi, a security guard wondered why the new currencies were not being dispensed over the counter inside the banking halls.

Our checks across commercial banks confirmed that the redesigned currency notes in 200, 500 and 1,000 denominations were being dispensed at the ATMs and Point of Sales outlets.
