Napoli Celebrates Osimhen’s Goal-scoring Record

November 08, (THEWILL) – Victor Osimhen became the highest-scoring Nigerian in Serie A history with his goal against Atalanta last weekend, and the Italian Serie A leaders, Napoli, have celebrated him for the accomplishment.

Osimhen had an explosive first half of the season, scoring twice in Napoli’s first two games before he sustained a hamstring injury that kept him from playing for more than a month. But, the 23-year-old Nigerian striker made a fiery comeback in October, scoring in the Partenopeans’ 4-2 victory over Ajax.

Osimhen has scored six goals in five matches for Napoli since then, including a hat-trick against Sassuolo. The Partenopeans visited Atlanta last weekend, and Osimhen once more shone brightly. The Super Eagles striker made amends for his involvement in the penalty that resulted in Atalanta’s goal by scoring and providing an assist to make it 2-1 at Bergamo.

The goal propelled him to the top of the list of Nigerian goal scorers in Serie A. Osimhen and Simy Nwankwo shared the lead with 31 goals going into the game and that goal brought the total of the Napoli forward to 32.

Napoli felt the need to celebrate him on social media with a Twitter post that read: “@victorosimhen9’s goal against Atalanta at the weekend saw him become the top-scoring Nigerian in @SerieA_EN of all time! #ForzaNapoliSempre”

When Napoli hosts Empoli on Tuesday, Osimhen could set yet another record. If he scores, he will become the first Napoli player since Arkadiusz Milik in 2019 to score in five straight Serie A games.
