January 26, (THEWILL) – In the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night, Manchester United registered a 3-0 lead against Nottingham Forest with a debut Wout Weghorst goal that puts them one step closer to reaching the final at Wembley.
The game began with a strong start for Manchester United, with Marcus Rashford scoring within the first six minutes. Forest seemed to struggle with their formation, giving Manchester United opportunities to attack from the wings.
Despite having a goal being ruled offside by VAR, Forest continued to push forward with Gustavo Scarpa forcing a save from David De Gea and Brennan Johnson’s pace creating a couple of chances. Both teams had opportunities to score, but it wasn’t until the end of the first half that Manchester United scored again with Weghorst capitalising on a rebound from Wayne Hennessey.
In the second half, as Hennessey made a couple of saves, United increasingly controlled the game and in the end, Fernandes secured the third goal for the team to put Erik ten Hag’s charges firmly in control of their potential to reach the final and possibly finish the season with some silverware for a change.
The second leg will be a difficult task for Forest as they need to score at least three goals to progress to the final, while Manchester United will be looking to hold on to their lead. United is in FA Cup action with a fourth-round match at home to Reading on Saturday, while Forest have a full week to recover before the second leg of this tie next Wednesday.
