January 04, (THEWILL) – Manchester United climbed into the top four of the English Premier League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday.
Marcus Rashford, who had scored the winning goal from the bench in United’s previous match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, returned to the starting lineup and scored the final goal of the match with a tap-in.
The first goal of the match came from a left-wing free-kick by Christian Eriksen, which was volleyed into the top-left corner by Casemiro. Luke Shaw then doubled United’s lead with a neat finish. Bournemouth may have managed to keep United from scoring after Casemiro’s goal, but their luck ran out shortly after the restart when Shaw scored off a cut-back from Alejandro Garnacho.
Wasted efforts from Anthony Martial and Garnacho did not matter as United sealed their victory when Rashford converted Bruno Fernandes’ cut-back following an excellent pass from Shaw. Goalkeeper David de Gea also made strong saves to keep out shots from Philip Billing and Jaidon Anthony.
The victory moved United five points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham and level with Newcastle United, who drew against Arsenal. The FA Cup is next for both teams and on Friday, Everton will visit United at Old Trafford, and Burnley will take on Bournemouth the following day.
