January 08, (THEWILL) – Manchester City secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup third round on Sunday, with Riyad Mahrez scoring twice at the Etihad Stadium.
The home team dominated from the start and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Mahrez curled a free kick into the net. Julian Alvarez added a second goal from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark after VAR intervened to award the penalty for a handball by Kai Havertz.
Phil Foden then scored eight minutes later to give City a commanding lead. Despite substitutions and a change in system by Chelsea Manager, Graham Potter, the visiting team could not find a way back into the game.
Manchester City added a fourth goal in the final stages, with Mahrez scoring from the penalty spot to set up a fourth-round tie at home to either Oxford or Arsenal, who are due to clash in their own scheduled match on Monday.
The Citizens will now turn their attention to an EFL Cup match against Southampton on Wednesday, before facing Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday. Chelsea will travel to Fulham in the league on Thursday.
