November 03, (THEWILL) – Ademola Lookman has reached new heights at Atalanta Bergamasco in just the three months he has been at the Italian club.
In Atalanta’s 2-0 victory over Empoli at the weekend, Lookman scored his fifth goal in 12 games. It means the Nigerian international has now scored the quickest five goals than any other Atalanta newcomer in the Italian Serie A, outperforming Josip Ilicic, who had five goals after 17 games in the 2017/2018 season and Duván Zapata, who had five after 15 games.
Lookman also performed better than Luis Muriel, who may have scored five goals in his first eight games for Atalanta, but with a key distinction that he has previously played for Udinese, Sampdoria, and Fiorentina, giving him previous Serie A experience that Lookman did not have.
Stephen Ayo Makinwa, a former Nigerian international, holds the record for the quickest player to score six goals for Atalanta, but Lookman is closing in on it. Makinwa scored six goals in his first 18 games for the Serie A side after moving there from Genoa.
When Serie A leaders Napoli visit Atalanta this weekend at the Gewiss Stadium, Lookman will have that record in his sights and Makinwa has given the 25-year-old his support in his bid to rewrite Atalanta history. On August 4, Atalanta paid Bundesliga side RB Leipzig €12 million for Lookman and it is looking like money well spent.
